BP – WYTCH FARM CASE STUDY

Wytch Farm is an oil field and processing facility in the Purbeck district of Dorset, England. It is the largest onshore oil field in Western Europe. The facility, recently taken over by Perenco was previously operated by BP. It is hidden in a coniferous forest on Wytch Heath on the southern shore of Poole Harbour, two miles (3 km) north of Corfe Castle. Oil and natural gas (methane) are both exported by pipeline; liquified petroleum gas is exported by road tanker.

Client Objectives

To prepare and implement a proactive community consultation and communications strategy. To ensure there is no environmental impact over the sensitive areas BP are operating through the Isle of Purbeck.

Client Brief

To survey a number of potential pipeline routes, enabling BP to assess the environmental impact of each route over the 70 miles between Purbeck and Southampton, thus avoiding highly sensitive environmental areas. Aerial photography and video filming were also regularly used to monitor construction progress of both the pipeline and the main oilfield sites. Community and Local Authority consultation and briefings were conducted throughout the project lifecycle.
